Academic Degree Program Reviews

Academic Degree Program Reviews

Program review at Indiana University Bloomington is a cornerstone of institutional quality assurance and continuous improvement. It reflects the university’s commitment to excellence in teaching, research, and service, and ensures that all degree programs remain vibrant, relevant, and aligned with IUB’s mission and strategic priorities. Program review provides a structured opportunity for degree programs to engage in comprehensive self-assessment, informed by data and stakeholder input, and to demonstrate accountability to internal and external constituencies, including the Higher Learning Commission (HLC) and the Indiana Commission for Higher 91福利社(ICHE).

Purpose

The purpose of program review is to:

  • Support continuous improvement by identifying strengths, challenges, and actionable recommendations that enhance student learning, faculty achievement, and resource stewardship.
  • Evaluate program quality, viability, and productivity through both quantitative and qualitative analysis.
  • Align programs with institutional and state priorities, including IUB’s strategic plan and workforce development needs, and the expectations of the Higher Learning Commission (HLC) regarding academic quality, institutional effectiveness, and assessment of student learning.
  • Promote transparency and accountability through public posting of review summaries and systematic follow-up to confirm implementation of recommendations.
  • Ensure compliance with IU Policy ACA-65 and state requirements, including a review cycle of at least once every seven years and submission of findings to ICHE.

Program review is not merely a compliance exercise; it is a forward-looking process that informs strategic planning, fosters innovation, and strengthens IUB’s academic reputation. The following guidelines are provided to assist units in conducting a consistent, but flexible program review.
